"I have been a special education teacher and reading specialist for 12 years. Imagine the difficulty of trying to teach a child to read who has no books at home - then, books available to them in school do not spark their interest nor represent who they are. It makes a difficult job that much more difficult." - Mrs. Burrell
The Problem: 61% Of children in low-income communities do not own a single book- US Department of Ed.
The Goal: Donate 10,000 books to children in low-income communities that intentionally represent those children.
HOW IT WORKS:
People donate gently used diverse books, purchase my books to be donated, or donate funds towards this effort.
Then I intentionally give books to children who are in need. This is done by way of community events, sponsoring classrooms, and giving books to children I come across who otherwise would not be able to have one. The experience is exciting and liberating for all involved.
Message From The Author
My name is Erica M. Burrell and I am an author, illustrator, and special education teacher. I have been a reading specialist for 12 years and quickly recognized the need for diverse books that highlight the communities I serve. In addition, the motivation for my books is personal. As a Black woman coming out of the foster care system and diagnosed dyslexic, I never saw positive images of myself until I went off to college. These books are my way of changing the feeling of loneliness for current and future students of color. This is also why I learned how to draw — so that I can illustrate stories that often go untold. Often, the people I write about cannot always afford a book. So I am relying on this pay-it-forward program to bridge this gap. Thank you for your support.
